Abe waited until they got into their home before sitting down with the boys to discuss the week-end. He made them sandwiches when they got back and his sister, Naomi, had left half a shoofly pie for them, which they devoured in minutes.

Before they started to clear the table, he motioned for them to sit. “How do you like Anna’s kinner?” he asked them.

“Great!” Benny said, grinning. “She’s got cool sohns.”

Abe turned towards John. “Well?”

He shrugged. “Okay, I guess. Rachel’s cute.”

“She took a fancy to you,” Abe said with a smile. “Anna was afraid she was annoying you.”

“She was, a little.”

“I think she’ll really like Allie, Daed,” Benny said.

“That’s what I’m hoping.”

“Are you really gonna get married?” John asked, his voice cracking slightly.

“It depends.”

“On?”

“Lots of things. First of all, Allie has to like Anna enough to accept her.”

“As a mudder? You think that can really happen?” John asked, his mouth firm.

“Look, buwe. No one will ever really take the place of your mudder, but we have to face the fact that she is gone. She will never be back. Do you think Allie should stay with your aenti forever? Don’t you think she’d be better off being raised with a mudder figure and with her bruders and her daed?”

John looked down at the table and folded his arms. “I guess if you put it that way.”

“Jah, you’re being selfish,” Benny said, glaring over at his brother.

“That’s not nice, Ben,” Abe said to his younger son. “John just has reservations, is all.”

“Jah, it’s not selfish to think about things, Ben.” John put his hands on the table and leaned forward glaring back.

Benny spoke up. “But I’d like Anna to take care of me. She’s a nice lady. Okay, she’s not our real mamm, but she sure makes gut cakes and she smiles all the time.”

“That’s only because she wants everyone to like her,” John said sternly.

“There’s nothing wrong with that,” his father said. “We could stand seeing some smiles come from you once in a while, Sohn.”

John’s mouth dropped open. “Don’t I smile?”

“Not often,” Abe said quietly.

“Hardly ever,” Benny added. “You always look sad.”

“Maybe ’cause I am.”

“Oh, John,” Abe said, reaching across the table to touch his son’s hand. “I’m sorry it’s been so hard on you. I’ve been so wrapped up in my own grief, that maybe I haven’t been there for you the way I should.”

“Nee, Daed. You were gut. I know you’ve done your best. I just miss Mamm so much sometimes.” He put his hands over his face and began to weep.

Benny looked shocked to see his brother so upset and began to cry himself.

Abe extended his arms. “Come here, buwe. Let me hold you both.”

They went over and knelt on the floor beside their father as he enveloped them in his arms. “Gott, please help us through this. We can’t do it alone.”

And Abe wept.
